Search behaviour review: May 2020

By David Toscano, Trade Content Editor, carsales.com.au

May was a record month for car-shopping activity on carsales.com.au, with 4.8M Australians spending, on average, over 37 minutes on site per the month.

So with audience and engagement at an all-time high, what brands, models and segments were Australian consumers searching the most across new and used car markets?

And what was on their minds outside of normal search options?

Dive into our May search behaviour review below for the answers to those questions and more.

1. Utes are on the minds of new-car buyers

Spurred by the Instant Asset Write-Off allowance, the Ford Ranger, Mitsubishi Triton and Toyota HiLux were the top 3 new cars searched on carsales.com.au in May 2020.

The rest of the top 20 was dominated by medium SUVs such as the Toyota RAV4, Volkswagen Tiguan, Mazda CX-5, Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class and Hyundai Tucson.

2. There’s still plenty of demand for used small hatchbacks

Used SUVs and LCVs such as the Toyota Landcruiser, Toyota HiLux and Ford Ranger are in hot demand on carsales.com.au.

In addition, small hatches favourites such as the Volkswagen Golf and Mazda3 still hold plenty of appeal with Australian car shoppers.

3. Is the desire for road trips influencing searches?

Is exploring the great outdoors back on the minds of Australian car shoppers?

‘4x4’ and ‘convertible’ keyword searches surged on carsales.com.au in May, while there was further growth in the ‘ute’ search term ahead of the EOFY period.
